Things To Do On a Rainy Day—Discover Montreal’s Underground City

October 21, 2014
Montreal’s Underground City

An Innovative City

Known for many things, including the occasionally harsh winter weather, Montreal has a knack for finding creative and innovative solutions to its challenges. Even in the fall there are rainy and cold days mixed in with beautiful clear sunny skies. When it comes to cold wintry weather, a great pair of winter boots and sub-zero parka are a must. Another option is to take advantage of the extensive network of underground tunnels and walkways, keeping out of the elements all together.

Head Underground

These tunnels and walkways are known as the Underground City, and officially Réso or La Ville Souterrain. If you’re visiting Montreal, or staying in a downtown Montreal hotel suite, make use of these pedestrian-oriented walkways to access all kinds of great shopping and entertainment options. Even more, if you simply want to get out of your downtown Montreal hotel room for an afternoon and get some exercise, this is a great place to head to. It’s also a great spot to do some people watching, if you like that.

Your Ticket Inside

It can be a bit tricky to find entrances and exits, watch for the signs that say “RES.” Another easy way to find your way in is to watch for metro stations. Metro stations linked with the underground city include:

On the green line:

  • Peel
  • McGill
  • Place des Arts

On the orange line:

  • Place d’armes
  • Square Victoria
  • Bonaventure
  • Lucien-L’Allier

A Little Bit Of Everything

There are approximately 33 kilometers of passageways both below and above ground. They connect the downtown areas with the Metro system, trains and buses that all converge at various points within. There are also entertainment venues, artistic venues and a myriad of food and shopping choices all linked by the underground city. Make sure you have a map of the underground city to find out exactly where you are and where you want to go. Some places you can access via the underground city include:

  • The Eaton Centre
  • Place Ville Marie
  • McGill University
  • Gare Central
  • Bell Centre
  • Place du Canada
  • 1000 Gauchetiere
  • Place Bonaventure
  • Place Victoria
  • Palais de Congrés
  • Quartier des Spectales
  • Musee d’art Contemporary
  • Complexe Dejardins
  • Complex Guy Favreau
